Our Genitourinary Cancer
Treatment Center

Compassionate, patient-centered care

At the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Lank Center for Genitourinary Oncology, we want our patients to receive the safest, best treatment for their cancer. Our center provides compassionate care that is informed by research into the most effective therapies.

We know you face challenges which extend into family, work and other responsibilities. That knowledge guides how our team of specialists works with you to create a care plan that takes your individual goals and needs into account.

Our team will build a treatment plan tailored to your cancer, based on the latest surgical, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment approaches, including access to clinical trials.

In addition to offering the latest in clinical care, we provide a wide range of resources - from support groups to nutritional advice to complementary therapies - to support you physically and emotionally throughout your treatment.

We also offer Patient Navigation, which can assist you as you move through the cancer care continuum. Patient Navigation can help with arranging various forms of financial support, scheduling transportation to and from appointments, organizing child care during appointments, and more. Our GU Patient Navigator provides education about prostate cancer and treatment options, and upon request, will sit with you before, during and after your consultations with our clinicians.

Our clinicians are experts in treating all types of genitourinary cancer, including:

  • Adrenal cancer
  • Adrenocortical carcinoma
  • Bladder cancer
  • Germ cell testicular cancer
  • Kidney tumor

Expertise, innovation, and comprehensive care

Our genitourinary cancer experts at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Lank Center for Genitourinary Oncology work together to create an individualized treatment plan that offers each patient the most effective care.

During your first appointment at the center, you'll get a thorough consultation to help determine the best course of treatment for your cancer.

You will have the opportunity to meet with up to three specialists: a medical oncologist, a radiation oncologist, and a urologist. Working with you, these experts will evaluate, discuss, and recommend specific treatments to create a care plan that takes your individual needs into account.

Our team also includes radiologists, pathologists, nurse specialists, social workers, palliative care specialists and dietitians. Working together, we provide expert diagnostic services and innovative treatment options, including:

  • Brachytherapy, a procedure that uses tiny radioactive "seeds" about the size of a grain of rice that are injected directly into the prostate, where they remain and gradually become inactive over time
  • Clinical trials of new cancer therapies
  • Robotic prostatectomy to remove the prostate, or a resection to remove a portion of the prostate
  • External radiation therapy using a machine outside the body to target the cancerous cells
  • Hormone therapy to block the hormones that cancer cells need to continue growing
  • Other innovative treatments including cryosurgery to freeze the cancer cells, biologic therapy that uses the patient's own immune system to fight cancer, high-intensity focused ultrasound to destroy cancer cells, and proton beam radiation therapy that targets tumors with streams of protons
  • Robotic surgery
  • Intraoperative magnetic resonance therapy
  • Dose-escalated intensity modulated radiation therapy, delivered with a unique prostate localization and immobilization device
  • Innovative treatment combinations, including hormone therapy and chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy, conducted as part of rigorously-controlled clinical trials

We also run several laboratories that are investigating the molecular basis of all genitourinary malignancies. These research efforts are vital, because basic science is a crucial component in the treatment of cancer. Understanding the basic mechanisms of disease will ultimately translate into better treatment for our patients.
