Course Objectives
This half-day course will provide medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation therapists, nurses and other interested clinicians with an update regarding the management of gastrointestinal cancers. Specialists in gastrointestinal oncology will present the latest information for managing colorectal, pancreatic, gastric, and esophageal cancer. Faculty will also discuss the role of diet and lifestyle in colorectal cancer prevention and treatment as well as the emerging field of comparative effectiveness in oncology practice.
In addition to learning from faculty presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to present their own challenging cases for discussion and input by the panel of specialists.
About the Gastrointestinal Cancer Centers of Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center and Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center
We offer comprehensive care for patients with gastrointestinal cancers, including cancers of the colon, rectum, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, anus, bile duct (cholangiocarcinoma), liver, gallbladder, and small bowel, as well as carcinoid and islet cell malignancies. At each cancer center, care is provided by a multidisciplinary team that includes medical oncologists; radiation oncologists; colorectal, gastrointestinal, and oncologic surgeons; and gastroenterologists, with consultative support from gastrointestinal pathologists and gastrointestinal diagnostic and interventional radiologists.
These Harvard Medical School-affiliated centers provide the latest therapies in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation for gastrointestinal cancers. These include intraoperative radiation therapy, radiofrequency treatment, percutaneous cryosurgery, pancreatic resections, endoscopic ultrasonography, endoscopic biliary stent placement and access to 4D proton radiotherapy. Both centers also have active clinical research programs exploring new drug treatments and multimodality therapies. Genetic counseling; molecular diagnostic testing; and support services, including social work, nutrition counseling and educational and support groups are also offered.
